Cox Plate

One of the biggest events on the Australian racing calendar is the Cox Plate, held at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne. Often referred to as the “greatest two minutes in sport”, the Cox Plate is an exhilarating race, whether you’re new to the racing scene or a regular punter. Moonee Valley Racecourse is located only 6 kilometres away from the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. There are numerous thoroughbred races run each year at the Moonee Valley Racecourse, which is also the only metropolitan track to boast night racing, Australia-wide.

The Group 1 thoroughbred race is held annually and it’s a weight for age event for three-year-olds through to open class horses. It’s run on the last Saturday in October and has high stakes of $3,000,000 up for grabs, making it an exciting event for punters, the public and the racing fraternity. The event has a proud history, with many famous horses being known to have won this event, such as Phar Lap.

Sitting between the Victoria Derby, the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup, the Cox Plate is defined as one of the classic events in the international horse racing calendar. The Cox Plate field is released on the Tuesday before the race and it is the main event in the Cox Plate Carnival which starts on the Friday night with the opening event the Manikato Stakes Night.

The Cox Plate Field has the capacity to race 14 starters plus four emergencies, with many of the horses selected gaining entry into the race after spring features, in local racing events which include the Caulfield Stakes or even the Turnbull Stakes. The nominations for the race are taken in August and are typically chosen from over 200 early entries. With such a large number of horses, there are several declaration stages required to whittle down the line-up to those who have been confirmed as final acceptors. Renowned for having some of the top weight-for-age horses to be found in both Australia, New Zealand and Europe in the field, you are assured of a nail-biting finish that will leave you on the edge of your seat!
